At Avant Garde we have, over the last few years, explored the boundaries of the melodic and emotional, bringing an expanse of music from around the world to create a beautiful journey for those who join us on the dancefloor. However, what we have realised is that balance is something key to life; there is no ying without yang, no night without day, and, more importantly, no light without dark.

And thus, into the dark we go. Our exploration of the darker side of techno, dubbed ‘Raum’, begins on the 23rd of September at our favoured East London room of iniquity, Oval Space. The chief guide for this exploration requires extensive experience, skill and talent, and none demonstrate such abilities in abundance as Berghain resident and Ostgut functionary FUNCTION. The American legend, and founder of Sandwell District, has been playing for circa 27 years, his rise in stature a result of hard work and incredible production, resulting in him being part of a movement that forever changed electronic music.

Token Records producer and remixer of the likes of Planetary Assault Systems, Robert Hood and Marcel Dettman, Ø [Phase], joins Function on our techno journey. Although releasing extensively on the Belgian label, Ø [Phase] is a fellow Londoner with an emphatic history; Originally a Mastering engineer, he began producing as a sideline, releasing his debut EP ‘Module Overload’ on Steve Bicknell’s Lost/Cosmic records in 2000. This was followed by a string of productions for London’s Surface/Inceptive Records and Ben Sims Ingoma imprint, all of which saw consistent big name support throughout the techno community. We’re looking forward to hearing some of these iconic productions on Oval Space’s system.

KR!Z & PFIRTER play back to back for a set which will surely explore all angles of techno; Pfirter has released on the likes of CLR and Stroboscopic Artefacts, not to mention running one of the most up-and-coming techno imprints, MindTrip, whereas Kr!z is, of course, the founder of the aforementioned mecca of dark electronic music, Token. They’ll be supported by Vault Series regular MØRBECK, another Berlin regular and purveyor of versatility.
